Name: Chung Myung Go
Canon: Hotel del Luna
Canon Point: The end of episode 14, when leaving for the afterlife.
Age: Over 1300, but physically about mid-20s
Background: Chung Myung was born in Goguryeo, a fallen nation filled with strife. His family was forced to flee south to the country of Silla in order to create a more promising future for themselves, which certainly seemed to work out well for Chung Myung. He fell into the service of a king, and when still in his twenties became a captain of the palace guard, with the particular duty of protecting a princess named Song Hwa.
Between his confidence, wit, and appearance the princess took a particular interest in the young captain, though the attraction was one-sided on her part. Though he did his duty to protect the princess, his interest had been captured by a thief named Man Wol.
Chung Myung first became entangled with Man Wol when the bandit chief had ordered her group to attack the caravan that Chung Myung was protecting. He quickly spotted her sitting high above the fray while he was in the middle of combat. When she called off her men he chased her on horseback. During this chase he managed to tackle her off of a moving horse with minimal injuries, only to be startled by the realization she was a woman, and got knocked out by a rock to the head.
Not his most impressive moment.
Man Wol then took him hostage, having noticed how the princess seemed unconcerned by the thieves taking her money and expensive things, but seemed very worried about the life of Chung Myung during the skirmish. In this time Chung Myung was able to establish that the two of them shared a similar history of having originally been from Goguryeo, though his attempts to connect or flirt with Man Wol fell flat. In a short period of time he was able to save her life, take her hostage, then fall back into being her hostage when her friend once more hit him in the head with a rock.
Definitely not his most impressive moment.
Still, this fateful meeting allowed him to develop a friendship with some of the bandits, such as Man Wol's friend Yeon woo, as well as a romantic connection with Man Wol herself. As time marched on he earned their trust despite his duty as a palace guard.
Things took an unfortunate turn when the Goguryeo bandits decided to join a brewing rebellion against the rulers of Silla. This choice meant that the relationship with Chung Myung would have to come to an end, though Chung Myung at first tried to convince Man Wol to come with him to the palace, and even offered to give up his place in Silla to join their group. Man Wol rejected his offers, and sent him back to the palace alone.
Wanting one more chance to see her, Chung Myung left a coded sign for Man Wol to meet him before leaving. Sadly, the woman who showed up to meet him was Sung Hwa instead, and she came bearing a threatening message. His connection with the bandits had been discovered, and the only way to clear his name and protect the lives of his family, clan, and the men who worked under him was to round up the bandits he had befriended. If he chose not to, then all of the people connected to him would be killed.
Faced with this harrowing choice Chung Myung captured the bandits, knowing it would end in their death. During the capture, however, Yeon Woo had Chung Myung make a promise to him; instead of dying to atone for what he did to the bandits, Chung Myung would live pretending to have intended his betrayal from the beginning in order to gain power and levy it in a way to protect Man Wol's life.
Chung Myung was then forced to watch his friends be hanged in front of him, and to lie to the woman he loved while she swore to kill him. He was then "rewarded" for his success by being allowed to marry the princess. His true reward was convincing the princess to pardon Man Wol who had "helped" Chung Myung in his capturing of the bandits.
This new life as a hero/traitor was not long lived. On the very night of wedding to Sung Hwa, Man Wol stormed the palace, killing Chung Myung's new bride, and coming after Chung Myung with the intent to kill him as well. However, when she was slow to make the killing blow, Chung Myung made the final move himself, impaling himself upon her sword. As he choked out his dying breath, he vowed to keep watch over her for the rest of her life.
He kept his promise too. After her massacre at the palace, Man Wol sought to find a legendary inn for the dead, so she could put to rest the souls of her fallen comrades. What she found was a fickle god who decided to make Man Wol the new owner of that inn, effectively making Man Wol into an immortal with inhuman powers. Man Wol's new duty became to protect the souls of the recently deceased until they were ready to pass over into the afterlife.
Unbeknownst to her, Chung Myung became her very first guest. His soul fragile from everything that had happened, Chung Myung took the form of a firefly, and watched over Man Wol for over a millennium all while she bore a continued grudge against him.
It took until the modern era when Silla had long since become South Korea that Man Wol met a human named Chan Sung, who began to repair the tears in her heart.
Though there was not much Chung Myung could do to make himself seen at that point, he was able to interact briefly with Chan Sung in ways the man himself wasn't always fully cognizant of. Chung Myung even managed to save Chan Sung's life by briefly possessing his body and leading him to safety when Chan Sung almost wandered into the afterlife.
In the end, Chan Sung managed to repay the favor by allowing Man Wol to see the full truth behind Chung Myung's actions, and enabling Man Wol to finally let go of the resentment she held onto all those years.
Though their official remeeting was brief, Chung Myung was also able to let go of the messy feelings he had held onto for so long. However, his soul was still weak after existing for so long, and as a final act of penance for all of the death she had caused, the god who has placed the inn of the dead in Man Wol's care had Man Wol escort Chung Myung's soul to the afterlife.
Personality: By nature Chung Myung has always been a man with confidence that just barely manages to not cross the line into narcissism. He speaks highly of his own appearance, abilities, and importance in the lives of those around him, and he does it all with only the slightest hint of irony. Though he enjoys to tease in a friendly or even outright flirty manner, his self-compliments are still based around his own inflated opinion of himself.
Despite his self-aggrandizing nature, Chung Myung's friendly and personable nature does make him genuinely interesting to many of the people who meet him. He has a sharp wit and tongue that can get him into some trouble, but he often knows what to say in order to charm the person he is talking to. At a young age he managed to climb up the ranks of the guards quickly enough to have many men under his command, and even pulls off turning enemies into friends, and in one particular case a love interest as well. The lighthearted way he seems to approach interpersonal relationships helps to ease down people's guards, and let him in.
At the same time Chung Myung is well aware of when he needs to be serious. When on the job he's sharp and watchful, ready to launch himself into a deadly situation as needed, and quick to discern real threats as they arise. He handles his job with the gravity his station calls for, even in moments when his loyalty is muddled.
This is not to say that he is without loyalty, but instead that in a critical moment in his life his loyalty becomes split in two very different directions. The problem is that because Chung Myung is loyal this split causes him personal ruin when he is not fully able to commit in one direction or the other. When a literally deadly situation arises he wants to protect all of his loved ones, but is unable to do so, and in the end is still forced to sacrifice some of his friends in a decision that eats at him.
It is Chung Myung's loyalty that makes him decide to literally throw away his own life, because he struggles so deeply with the decision he made to protect his family and men at the expense of the lives of his friends. It is also that unfortunate dogged loyalty to the woman he loves that makes him decide to let her take his life, in order to give her a reason to keep going.
If it was just his own life on the line it may almost be tragically understandable, but Chung Myung's poor choices never just affect himself. Unfortunately the night that Man Wol came to take her revenge on Chung Myung she didn't just leave it at killing him. She also took the lives of several palace guards, and finally the princess Sung Hwa before she even came face to face with Chung Myung at all. Chung Myung making the decision to step forward onto Man Wol's sword also took her chance to kill him away from her, and led her down her own path of desiring further revenge she hadn't been able to enact on the night he died.
No, the unfortunate truth of it is that when Chung Myung makes a bad decision, he really makes a bad decision; the sort of choices that impact multitudes of people around him just about as negatively as possible. One of his biggest flaws as a person is that he often acts on the feeling of his gut or his heart, and lets careful decision making fall by the wayside. Admittedly, during these big decisions he is often not given much time to weigh out his options before his hand is forced, but that isn't always the case. He still makes choices that he has more than enough time to go back on, such as befriending a group of bandits while continuing to work directly under a paranoid king.
Regardless of his poor life choices, Chung Myung often makes them from a genuinely good place. He is someone who deeply cares about the people in his life, and will gladly self-sacrifice to protect them to the best of his abilities. He carries guilt deeply, and does not forgive himself lightly.
